History of Purworejo


              History records that the Ara Hiwang Wood Inscription found in Boro Wetan Village (Banyuurip District), if converted to the Christian calendar is October 5, 901. This inscription was found under the Sono tree in the Middle Boro hamlet, now in the Boro Wetan region of Banyuurip sub-district and since in 1890 it was stored in the Jakarta National Museum inventory D 78. The location of the findings is located on the banks of the Bogowonto river. In this inscription, it was revealed that on October 5, 901, a large ceremony was held which was attended by various officials from various regions, including the names of the regions: Watu Tihang (Sala Thang), Gulak, Parangran Wadihadi, Padamuan (Prambanan) , Mntyasih (Matesh Magelang), Mdang, Pupur, Taji (Taji Prambanan) Pekambingan, Kalungan (Kalongan, Loano). The events of October 5, 901 AD finally on October 5, 1994 in the DPRD regency session Purworejo was chosen and set for the Purworejo District Anniversary.

                Since ancient times Purworejo district has been better known as the Bagelen land area. Regions that are highly respected by other regions, because in history there are a number of figures. For example in the development of Islam in southern Java, the figure of Sunan Geseng is known as a great Ulama who converted the region from the east of the Lukola river and its influence to the Special Region of Yogyakarta and the District of Magelang.

                In the formation of the Islamic Mataram kingdom, the figures of Bagelen were the mainstay of Satuwijaya who later after reigning the title Panembahan Senapati. In history it was noted that the figure of Bagelen was instrumental in various military operations so that the name Bagelen was highly respected.

                In the war of Diponegoro in the nineteenth century, the Tanah Bagelen area was also a battleground because Prince Diponegoro received wide support from the local community. During the Diponegoro War, the Bagelen area was made a residence and entered the Dutch East Indies with its capital city Purworejo City. The area of ​​residency in Bagelen is divided into several duchy, including the duchy of Semawung (Kutoarjo) and the Duchy of Purworejo, led by the First Regent, the Duke of the First Cokronegoro. In its development, the Duchy of Semawung (Kutoarjo) was later combined with the Duchy of Purworejo.

                In 1936, the Governor of the Netherlands East Indies changed the government administration in South Kedu, Karanganyar and Ambal Regencies combined into one with Kebumen and Kebumen Regency. Whereas Kutoarjo Regency was also combined with Purworejo, plus a number of regions which had previously been administered by Urut Sewu / Ledok Regency to Purworejo District. While the Ledok Regency is Wonosobo Regency.


                In its historical development Purworejo Regency is known as a pioneer in the field of education and is known as a region that produces labor in the field of education and is known as an area that produces labor in the fields of education, agriculture and the military. The figures that emerged included WR Supratman Composer for the national anthem "Indonesia Raya". General Urip Sumoharjo, General A. Yani, Sarwo Edy Wibowo and so on.
